What is it

What is a Tubular Screw Conveyor?

A tubular screw conveyor uses a helical screw rotating inside a fully enclosed cylindrical tube — giving complete dust containment, contamination prevention, and the ability to convey at any angle from horizontal to vertical, in any direction, without material escaping to atmosphere.

Fully enclosed — the defining feature

The key engineering difference between a tubular screw conveyor and a U-trough screw conveyor is the complete cylindrical enclosure. In a U-trough, the screw sits in an open-topped trough covered by a flat plate — there are joints, inspection openings, and gaps at inlets and outlets where dust can escape. In a tubular conveyor, the screw is enclosed in a seamless tube — the only openings are the inlet and outlet connections, which are flanged and gasketed for dust-tight sealing.

This complete enclosure is why tubular screw conveyors are specified for flour mills, spice processing, chemical plants, pharma, and any application where dust emission to atmosphere is a PCB compliance issue, a hygiene concern, or a product loss problem.

Any angle — horizontal, inclined, or vertical

U-trough screw conveyors are limited to near-horizontal installation — incline above 20° causes material to slide back rather than convey forward, reducing capacity significantly. Tubular screw conveyors are not limited by inclination: the enclosed tube means material is fully contained and moved regardless of angle — from horizontal through any inclination angle to fully vertical.

This ability to convey at any angle makes tubular screw conveyors the preferred choice for multi-floor plant layouts where material must be elevated between levels, or for connecting equipment at different heights without a separate bucket elevator or pneumatic system.

Working principle

How a Tubular Screw Conveyor Works

Four stages — from material inlet to discharge — all within a sealed cylindrical enclosure that prevents any dust or product from escaping to atmosphere.

1
Material enters at sealed inlet

Material is fed into the conveyor at the inlet flange — bolted and gasketed to the upstream equipment (silo outlet, hopper, process machine) for a dust-tight connection. No material escapes at the feed point.

2
Screw rotates inside the sealed tube

The helical screw (flight) rotates inside the cylindrical tube — pushing material forward with each rotation. The tube bore is typically 5–10 mm larger than the flight OD, allowing free rotation while keeping material fully enclosed.

3
Material conveyed at rated capacity

Capacity is controlled by screw speed (RPM), pitch, and filling degree (typically 40–60% of tube cross-section). All three factors are calculated from your material's bulk density and required TPH — specified at no charge with every quotation.

4
Discharge through sealed outlet

Material discharges at the outlet flange — again flanged and gasketed to downstream equipment. The complete tube encloses the full conveying path, ensuring zero dust emission from inlet to outlet.

Advantages

Advantages of Tubular Screw Conveyors

Five engineering advantages that make the tubular type the preferred screw conveyor for dust control, hygiene, and multi-angle conveying applications.

Dust-Free Conveying

Complete cylindrical enclosure with flanged, gasketed inlet and outlet connections — zero dust emission from any point along the conveying path. Critical for PCB compliance in cement and chemical plants, and for Food Safety Standards Authority compliance in food and pharma.

Compact Design

The cylindrical tube occupies minimum floor space — smaller footprint than equivalent U-trough conveyors for the same capacity. Can be routed through walls, floors, and structural frames without the large cover plate and open top of a U-trough system.

Reduced Material Loss

Complete sealing eliminates the material loss at joint gaps and cover plate edges that occurs in U-trough systems — particularly significant for expensive materials (spices, pigments, pharma powder) or for any application where fugitive dust is a measurable product loss.

Low Maintenance

No exposed moving parts — only the sealed bearing housings at each end require periodic lubrication. No belt, no chain, no external drive components exposed to dust. The tube itself is the only wear item — thickness specified for your material's abrasiveness.

Safe Material Handling

Full enclosure eliminates worker exposure to hazardous dusts (silica, chemical powders, spice dust, cement dust). Required by occupational health regulations for hazardous powder handling — the tubular design satisfies all relevant dust exposure standards.

Any Inclination Angle

Conveys from horizontal to fully vertical — unlike U-trough screw conveyors limited to under 20° inclination. One tubular screw conveyor can replace both a horizontal screw conveyor and a separate vertical elevator at the same installation, reducing equipment count and cost.

Applications

Applications of Tubular Screw Conveyors

Tubular screw conveyors are specified wherever dust control, contamination prevention, or multi-angle conveying is required — across food, chemical, pharma, cement, fertilizer, and powder handling industries.

Food Processing Industry

Flour, semolina, starch, sugar, salt, food ingredients — SS304 tubular conveyor with food-grade seal and polished bore. Prevents pest access, cross-contamination between product runs, and atmospheric moisture absorption in humid processing environments.

Chemical Industry

Chemical powders, pigments, dyes, calcium carbonate, talc — fully enclosed handling prevents worker exposure to hazardous dusts and prevents moisture or atmospheric contamination of hygroscopic chemicals. SS316 for corrosive chemical applications.

Pharmaceutical Industry

API and excipient powder transfer between granulators, dryers, mills, and blenders in GMP manufacturing environments. SS316L with electro-polished bore, no crevices, validated cleaning procedures, and FDA/EU-compliant documentation.

Cement Industry

Cement powder, raw meal, fly ash, and limestone powder transfer at raw mill, kiln, and packing plant — dust-tight MS tubular screw conveyors for PCB-compliant dust control. Inclined and vertical tubular conveyors for multi-floor elevation.

Fertilizer Plants

Urea, DAP, NPK, and granulated fertilizer transfer — sealed MS or SS tubular conveyor prevents moisture ingress for hygroscopic materials, and contains fertilizer dust to prevent environmental contamination and PCB issues.

Powder Handling Systems

Mineral powders — gypsum, barite, silica, calcium carbonate, talc — transfer between process equipment in mining, construction material, and industrial mineral processing plants. Complete dust enclosure satisfies silica dust exposure regulations.

Materials handled

Materials Handled by Tubular Screw Conveyors

Tubular screw conveyors are suited for dry to semi-dry powders and granules — any material where dust containment, contamination prevention, or inclined conveying is required.

Cement Powder

OPC, PPC, slag cement — between mill, silo, and packing. Bulk density 1.0–1.5 t/m³. MS tubular conveyor with air purge seal at shaft ends.

Fly Ash

ESP and bag filter fly ash — between silos and processing equipment. Low bulk density 0.6–0.9 t/m³. Dust-tight design essential for PCB compliance.

Flour

Wheat flour, maize flour, rice flour — between mill, sifter, and storage. SS304 polished bore. Pest-proof sealed construction for FSSAI compliance.

Spices

Ground spices, masala powders, dried herb powder — between grinder and blender. SS304 food-grade. Flanged covers for easy cleaning between product changeovers.

Chemical Powders

Pigments, dyes, calcium carbonate, talc, barium sulphate — between dryer, mill, and blender. SS316 for aggressive chemicals. Explosion-proof motor for hazardous areas.

Mineral Powders

Gypsum, barite, silica powder, limestone dust — between crusher, mill, and storage. Complete silica dust enclosure for occupational health compliance.

Fertilizers

Urea powder, DAP fines, phosphate powder — between process units and bagging. Sealed construction prevents moisture ingress for hygroscopic materials.

Salt & Sugar

Industrial and food-grade salt and sugar powder — SS304 with food-safe seals. Prevents caking from moisture and protects against rodent and pest access.
Not suitable for: Highly sticky, wet, or high-viscosity materials that would pack in the tube bore — these require a U-trough screw conveyor with open top for material release. Very large-lump materials (above 30 mm) also cannot pass through the 5–10 mm clearance between screw flight and tube bore. Our engineers confirm suitability for your material at no charge.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A tubular screw conveyor uses a helical screw rotating inside a fully enclosed cylindrical tube — unlike a U-trough screw conveyor where the screw sits in an open-topped trough covered by a flat plate. The complete cylindrical enclosure gives the tubular type its defining advantage: dust-tight, contamination-free conveying of powders and granules at any inclination — horizontal, inclined at any angle, or fully vertical — without any material escaping to atmosphere at joints, gaps, or cover plate edges.
Tubular screw conveyor: completely enclosed in a cylindrical tube — dust-tight, weatherproof, suitable for any inclination angle (0°–90°), ideal for flour, spices, chemical powders, pharma, cement, and any application where dust emission or contamination is a concern. Cleaning requires section removal. U-trough screw conveyor: open-top trough with flat cover plate — easier to inspect and clean by lifting the cover plate, better for sticky or high-moisture materials that would pack in a tube bore, better for large-lump granular material. Limited to near-horizontal installation (under 20° inclination). Our engineers specify the correct type for your material and application at no charge.
Tubular screw conveyors handle cement powder, fly ash, wheat flour, rice flour, maize flour, semolina, ground spices, sugar, salt, chemical powders (calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, barite, silica), fertilizer powder (urea, DAP), mineral powders, pigments, pharma excipients, and any free-flowing dry powder or granule. The material must be dry enough to flow and fine enough to fit through the 5–10 mm clearance between screw flight and tube bore. Highly sticky, wet, or large-lump materials require a U-trough type instead — our engineers confirm suitability for your material at no charge.
Neo Conveyors manufactures tubular screw conveyors in standard tube diameters of 150 mm (up to ~2 TPH), 200 mm (up to ~5 TPH), 250 mm (up to ~12 TPH), and 300 mm (up to ~25 TPH). These capacity figures are at horizontal installation and 0.8 t/m³ bulk density — actual capacity for your material and inclination angle is calculated by our engineers. Share your material name, bulk density, required TPH, length, and inclination for a free capacity calculation with the quotation.
Yes — tubular screw conveyors are available in MS (mild steel), SS304, and SS316. SS304 is the standard for food processing (flour, spices, sugar, salt), dairy, and pharma applications — polished bore (2B or electro-polished Ra 0.8 µm) available on request with FSSAI/GMP documentation. SS316 is specified for more corrosive chemical applications, marine environments, or pharma requiring higher chloride resistance. SS316L is available for welded food-grade designs requiring low carbon content.
Yes — one of the key advantages of the tubular type over U-trough screw conveyors is the ability to convey at any inclination from 0° (horizontal) to 90° (fully vertical). At higher inclinations, the filling degree (percentage of tube cross-section filled with material) is reduced — 40–60% horizontal, 25–35% inclined, 15–20% vertical. This means a larger tube diameter or faster screw speed is needed to achieve the same TPH at steeper angles — our engineers calculate the correct specification based on your inclination and required capacity.
Yes — PAN India installation and commissioning by Neo Conveyors' own engineers across all Indian states. We serve flour mills in Punjab, Haryana, and UP; spice processing units in Rajasthan and MP; chemical plants in Gujarat and Maharashtra; fertilizer plants in Gujarat; cement plants in Rajasthan, AP, and MP; and pharma plants across India. Lead time for standard tubular screw conveyors is 3–5 weeks from order confirmation.
Price depends on tube diameter (150–300 mm), conveyor length, material of construction (MS/SS304/SS316), inclination, shaft seal type, and drive motor specification. MS tubular screw conveyors are most economical; SS316 food-grade conveyors with electro-polished bore and GMP documentation are at the higher end. Contact Neo Conveyors at +91-9654112235 for a no-obligation quotation based on your material, capacity, and hygiene requirements.
