Overview

What Is a Tubular Screw Conveyor?

A tubular screw conveyor uses a helical screw rotating inside a fully enclosed cylindrical tube, giving complete dust containment, contamination prevention, and the ability to convey at any angle from horizontal to vertical, without material escaping to atmosphere.

Fully Enclosed — the Defining Feature

The key engineering difference between a tubular screw conveyor and a U-trough screw conveyor is the complete cylindrical enclosure. In a U-trough, the screw sits in an open-topped trough covered by a flat plate, with joints, inspection openings, and gaps at inlets and outlets where dust can escape. In a tubular conveyor, the screw is enclosed in a seamless tube, the only openings are the flanged, gasketed inlet and outlet connections. This is why tubular conveyors are specified for flour mills, spice processing, chemical plants, and pharma, wherever dust emission is a PCB compliance issue or a hygiene concern.

Any Angle — Horizontal, Inclined, or Vertical

U-trough conveyors are limited to near-horizontal installation, incline above 20° causes material to slide back, reducing capacity significantly. Tubular conveyors are not limited by inclination since the enclosed tube fully contains material regardless of angle. This makes them the preferred choice for multi-floor layouts where material must be elevated between levels without a separate bucket elevator or pneumatic system.

Working principle

How a Tubular Screw Conveyor Works

Four stages, from material inlet to discharge, all within a sealed cylindrical enclosure that prevents any dust or product from escaping to atmosphere.

01

Material enters at sealed inlet

Fed at the inlet flange, bolted and gasketed to upstream equipment for a dust-tight connection.

02

Screw rotates inside the sealed tube

The helical flight pushes material forward with each rotation; tube bore is 5–10 mm larger than flight OD.

03

Material conveyed at rated capacity

Controlled by screw speed, pitch, and filling degree, typically 40–60% of tube cross-section, calculated free with every quotation.

04

Discharge through sealed outlet

Flanged and gasketed to downstream equipment, zero dust emission from inlet to outlet.

Advantages

Advantages of Tubular Screw Conveyors

Six engineering advantages that make the tubular type preferred for dust control, hygiene, and multi-angle conveying.

Dust-Free Conveying

Complete cylindrical enclosure, zero dust emission from inlet to outlet, critical for PCB and FSSAI compliance.

Compact Design

Smaller footprint than equivalent U-trough conveyors; can route through walls and floors.

Reduced Material Loss

Complete sealing eliminates loss at joint gaps, significant for expensive materials.

Low Maintenance

No exposed moving parts; only sealed bearing housings need periodic lubrication.

Safe Material Handling

Full enclosure eliminates worker exposure to hazardous dusts, silica, chemical powders, cement dust.

Any Inclination Angle

One tubular conveyor can replace both a horizontal screw conveyor and a separate elevator.

Selection guide

How to Select the Right Tubular Screw Conveyor

Four parameters our engineers use to specify tube diameter, screw pitch, material, and drive.

Material characteristicsFree-flowing, cohesive, abrasive, or food/pharma grade each changes tube diameter, pitch, and material selection.
Required capacity (TPH)Under 2 TPH suits 150 mm tube; 12–25 TPH needs 300 mm, recalculated for your material.
Distance & inclinationUnder 5 m is a single section; longer runs need intermediate hanger bearings; vertical needs short-pitch flight.
Hygiene & dust requirementsIndustrial dust control needs gasketed MS; food/FSSAI needs SS304 polished bore; GMP pharma needs SS316L electro-polish.

Share 4 parameters, material name, bulk density, required TPH, and conveyor length and inclination angle, and our engineers return tube diameter, screw pitch, speed, motor power, and a GA drawing at no charge. Submit requirements →

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tubular screw conveyor?

A tubular screw conveyor uses a helical screw rotating inside a fully enclosed cylindrical tube, unlike a U-trough screw conveyor where the screw sits in an open-topped trough covered by a flat plate. The complete cylindrical enclosure gives dust-tight, contamination-free conveying at any inclination, horizontal, inclined, or fully vertical, without material escaping to atmosphere at joints or gaps.

What is the difference between a tubular and a U-trough screw conveyor?

Tubular conveyors are completely enclosed, dust-tight, weatherproof, and suitable for any inclination angle, ideal for flour, spices, chemical powders, pharma, and cement. U-trough conveyors have an open-top trough with a flat cover plate, easier to inspect and clean, better for sticky or high-moisture materials, but limited to near-horizontal installation under about 20 degrees.

What materials can tubular screw conveyors handle?

Cement powder, fly ash, wheat flour, rice flour, maize flour, semolina, ground spices, sugar, salt, chemical powders, fertilizer powder, mineral powders, pigments, and pharma excipients, any free-flowing dry powder or granule fine enough to fit through the clearance between screw flight and tube bore.

What diameter options are available?

Standard tube diameters of 150 mm (up to about 2 TPH), 200 mm (up to about 5 TPH), 250 mm (up to about 12 TPH), and 300 mm (up to about 25 TPH) at horizontal installation and 0.8 t/m³ bulk density. Actual capacity for your material and inclination is calculated by our engineers.

Are stainless steel tubular screw conveyors available?

Yes, in MS, SS304, and SS316. SS304 is standard for food processing, dairy, and pharma applications, polished bore available on request with FSSAI/GMP documentation. SS316 suits more corrosive chemical applications, marine environments, or pharma requiring higher chloride resistance.

Can a tubular screw conveyor convey material vertically?

Yes, one of the key advantages over U-trough conveyors is the ability to convey at any inclination from horizontal to fully vertical. At higher inclinations, filling degree is reduced, meaning a larger tube diameter or faster screw speed is needed to achieve the same TPH.

Do you provide installation support across India?

Yes, PAN India installation and commissioning by Neo Conveyors' own engineers, serving flour mills in Punjab, Haryana, and UP; spice processing in Rajasthan and MP; chemical plants in Gujarat and Maharashtra; fertilizer plants in Gujarat; cement plants in Rajasthan, AP, and MP; and pharma plants across India. Lead time is 3–5 weeks from order confirmation.

What is the price of a tubular screw conveyor in India?

Price depends on tube diameter, conveyor length, material of construction (MS/SS304/SS316), inclination, shaft seal type, and drive motor specification. Contact Neo Conveyors at +91-9654112235 for a no-obligation quotation.
