What is a Tubular Screw Conveyor?
A tubular screw conveyor uses a helical screw rotating inside a fully enclosed cylindrical tube — giving complete dust containment, contamination prevention, and the ability to convey at any angle from horizontal to vertical, in any direction, without material escaping to atmosphere.
Fully enclosed — the defining feature
The key engineering difference between a tubular screw conveyor and a U-trough screw conveyor is the complete cylindrical enclosure. In a U-trough, the screw sits in an open-topped trough covered by a flat plate — there are joints, inspection openings, and gaps at inlets and outlets where dust can escape. In a tubular conveyor, the screw is enclosed in a seamless tube — the only openings are the inlet and outlet connections, which are flanged and gasketed for dust-tight sealing.
This complete enclosure is why tubular screw conveyors are specified for flour mills, spice processing, chemical plants, pharma, and any application where dust emission to atmosphere is a PCB compliance issue, a hygiene concern, or a product loss problem.
Any angle — horizontal, inclined, or vertical
U-trough screw conveyors are limited to near-horizontal installation — incline above 20° causes material to slide back rather than convey forward, reducing capacity significantly. Tubular screw conveyors are not limited by inclination: the enclosed tube means material is fully contained and moved regardless of angle — from horizontal through any inclination angle to fully vertical.
This ability to convey at any angle makes tubular screw conveyors the preferred choice for multi-floor plant layouts where material must be elevated between levels, or for connecting equipment at different heights without a separate bucket elevator or pneumatic system.
How a Tubular Screw Conveyor Works
Four stages — from material inlet to discharge — all within a sealed cylindrical enclosure that prevents any dust or product from escaping to atmosphere.
Material is fed into the conveyor at the inlet flange — bolted and gasketed to the upstream equipment (silo outlet, hopper, process machine) for a dust-tight connection. No material escapes at the feed point.
The helical screw (flight) rotates inside the cylindrical tube — pushing material forward with each rotation. The tube bore is typically 5–10 mm larger than the flight OD, allowing free rotation while keeping material fully enclosed.
Capacity is controlled by screw speed (RPM), pitch, and filling degree (typically 40–60% of tube cross-section). All three factors are calculated from your material's bulk density and required TPH — specified at no charge with every quotation.
Material discharges at the outlet flange — again flanged and gasketed to downstream equipment. The complete tube encloses the full conveying path, ensuring zero dust emission from inlet to outlet.
Advantages of Tubular Screw Conveyors
Five engineering advantages that make the tubular type the preferred screw conveyor for dust control, hygiene, and multi-angle conveying applications.
Dust-Free Conveying
Complete cylindrical enclosure with flanged, gasketed inlet and outlet connections — zero dust emission from any point along the conveying path. Critical for PCB compliance in cement and chemical plants, and for Food Safety Standards Authority compliance in food and pharma.
Compact Design
The cylindrical tube occupies minimum floor space — smaller footprint than equivalent U-trough conveyors for the same capacity. Can be routed through walls, floors, and structural frames without the large cover plate and open top of a U-trough system.
Reduced Material Loss
Complete sealing eliminates the material loss at joint gaps and cover plate edges that occurs in U-trough systems — particularly significant for expensive materials (spices, pigments, pharma powder) or for any application where fugitive dust is a measurable product loss.
Low Maintenance
No exposed moving parts — only the sealed bearing housings at each end require periodic lubrication. No belt, no chain, no external drive components exposed to dust. The tube itself is the only wear item — thickness specified for your material's abrasiveness.
Safe Material Handling
Full enclosure eliminates worker exposure to hazardous dusts (silica, chemical powders, spice dust, cement dust). Required by occupational health regulations for hazardous powder handling — the tubular design satisfies all relevant dust exposure standards.
Any Inclination Angle
Conveys from horizontal to fully vertical — unlike U-trough screw conveyors limited to under 20° inclination. One tubular screw conveyor can replace both a horizontal screw conveyor and a separate vertical elevator at the same installation, reducing equipment count and cost.
Applications of Tubular Screw Conveyors
Tubular screw conveyors are specified wherever dust control, contamination prevention, or multi-angle conveying is required — across food, chemical, pharma, cement, fertilizer, and powder handling industries.
Food Processing Industry
Flour, semolina, starch, sugar, salt, food ingredients — SS304 tubular conveyor with food-grade seal and polished bore. Prevents pest access, cross-contamination between product runs, and atmospheric moisture absorption in humid processing environments.
Chemical Industry
Chemical powders, pigments, dyes, calcium carbonate, talc — fully enclosed handling prevents worker exposure to hazardous dusts and prevents moisture or atmospheric contamination of hygroscopic chemicals. SS316 for corrosive chemical applications.
Pharmaceutical Industry
API and excipient powder transfer between granulators, dryers, mills, and blenders in GMP manufacturing environments. SS316L with electro-polished bore, no crevices, validated cleaning procedures, and FDA/EU-compliant documentation.
Cement Industry
Cement powder, raw meal, fly ash, and limestone powder transfer at raw mill, kiln, and packing plant — dust-tight MS tubular screw conveyors for PCB-compliant dust control. Inclined and vertical tubular conveyors for multi-floor elevation.
Fertilizer Plants
Urea, DAP, NPK, and granulated fertilizer transfer — sealed MS or SS tubular conveyor prevents moisture ingress for hygroscopic materials, and contains fertilizer dust to prevent environmental contamination and PCB issues.
Powder Handling Systems
Mineral powders — gypsum, barite, silica, calcium carbonate, talc — transfer between process equipment in mining, construction material, and industrial mineral processing plants. Complete dust enclosure satisfies silica dust exposure regulations.
Materials Handled by Tubular Screw Conveyors
Tubular screw conveyors are suited for dry to semi-dry powders and granules — any material where dust containment, contamination prevention, or inclined conveying is required.

Tubular Screw Conveyor vs U-Trough Screw Conveyor
Both types use a rotating helical screw to convey material — the enclosure design determines which applications each type is correct for.
| Feature | ✅ Tubular (This page) | U-Trough Screw Conveyor |
|---|---|---|
| Dust control | Excellent — complete cylindrical enclosure | Good — flat cover plate, some gaps possible |
| Hygiene | Excellent — sealed, no exposed surfaces | Moderate — cover plate joints and hinges |
| Inclination range | 0° to 90° — any angle | 0° to ~20° — limited by open trough |
| Powder handling | Excellent — sealed for finest powders | Good — some dust at cover plate edges |
| Outdoor use | Excellent — weatherproof cylindrical tube | Good — cover plate protects but not fully sealed |
| Cleaning access | Moderate — flanged sections removable | Excellent — lift cover plate for full access |
| Sticky material | Not suitable — material packs in bore | Better — open trough allows material to self-clear |
| Large lump material | Not suitable — clearance too small | Better — open trough accommodates larger lumps |
| Capital cost | Slightly higher — machined tube bore | Slightly lower — pressed trough fabrication |
| Best applications | Flour, spices, chemical powder, pharma, cement dust | Grain, wet cake, sludge, large-lump granular |
