What Is a Tubular Screw Conveyor — and When Is It the Right Choice?
Neo Conveyors is a specialist tubular screw conveyor manufacturer in India since 2007. A tubular screw conveyor — also called a pipe screw conveyor or enclosed screw conveyor — houses the rotating helical screw flight inside a fully enclosed circular pipe or tube rather than an open-top U-shaped trough. This single design feature makes the tubular screw conveyor the only correct specification wherever your plant requires complete dust containment, material enclosure during conveying, hygienic handling, or inclined transport of fine powders. The enclosed pipe body prevents all dust emission at the conveyor body — critical for cement, fly ash, chemical fine powders, flour, spices, pharmaceutical API, and any material that must not contact the external environment or create workplace dust exposure. Tubular screw conveyors also handle inclined transport up to 45° more effectively than open U-trough types, because the enclosed housing prevents material from tumbling back down the screw. As part of our complete screw conveyor range →, Neo Conveyors designs each tubular system from your material, required TPH, length, and inclination — fabricated at our Ghaziabad plant and installed PAN India by our own engineers.

How a Tubular Screw Conveyor Works — Construction & MOC Selection Guide
Understanding the four-stage conveying cycle and the three material of construction options ensures you get the correct specification for your material, hygiene standard, and operating environment the first time.
Material of Construction (MOC) Selection Guide
MOC selection is driven by material corrosivity, hygiene requirement, and operating temperature. Our engineers specify the correct MOC for your application before design.
Standard Industrial
Painted or powder-coated mild steel pipe and flights. For cement, fly ash, fertilizer, sand, and non-corrosive industrial powders. Most economical option.
Best for: Cement · Fly Ash · Fertilizer
Food Grade / Mild Corrosive
Stainless steel 304 pipe, screw, and end covers. Polished interior for food hygiene. Suitable for flour, sugar, spices, milk powder, and mildly corrosive chemicals.
Best for: Food · Spices · Mild chemicals
Pharma / Highly Corrosive
SS 316 / 316L pipe, screw, and flights with electro-polished interior and FDA-compliant seals. For pharmaceutical API, reactive chemicals, saline, and aggressive environments.
Best for: Pharma API · Reactive chemicals
Up to 45° Inclination
Optimised pitch and RPM for inclined conveying up to 45°. Enclosed pipe prevents material backflow. Single unit replaces complex inclined trough with transfer points.
Best for: Multi-floor · Inclined transfer
Variable Speed Control
Variable frequency drive on geared motor — allows precise TPH control from control panel without stopping. Essential for process-integrated dosing and metering applications.
Best for: Dosing · Process integration
Multiple Feed Points
Multiple feed inlets along one conveyor body — for collecting material from several discharge points into one transfer line. Used in silo discharge, mixing, and blending applications.
Best for: Silo discharge · Blending
MS is the most widely specified construction for Indian cement, fly ash, and fertilizer applications. SS 304 is standard for all food and FMCG applications. SS 316 is mandatory for pharmaceutical and highly corrosive chemical environments.
The Four-Stage Tubular Screw Conveying Cycle
Material Feed Inlet
Bulk material enters the tubular conveyor through a flanged inlet port on the top of the pipe body — via gravity from a silo outlet, discharge hopper, or upstream equipment. An inlet slide gate controls feed rate. The enclosed inlet prevents any dust emission at the loading point.
Screw Rotation Inside Pipe
A helical screw flight welded to a central shaft rotates inside the closed circular pipe. As the screw rotates, the flights push material axially along the pipe — like a large auger through an enclosed bore. The pipe housing prevents material from escaping or generating dust at any point along the conveyor body.
Controlled Material Flow
Material moves at a rate determined by screw RPM and diameter — both controlled precisely by the geared motor and VFD. For inclined runs up to 45°, the optimised pitch and RPM prevent material from sliding back, maintaining consistent throughput without the efficiency loss that affects open U-trough conveyors at inclination.
Dust-Free Discharge
Material exits through a flanged outlet spout at the bottom of the pipe at the far end. The outlet connects directly to the downstream silo, hopper, or process equipment via flange — maintaining the fully enclosed, dust-free material path from inlet to discharge without any open transfer point.

What Materials Are Suitable for Tubular Screw Conveyors — and What Are Not
Tubular screw conveyors are designed for free-flowing to moderately cohesive dry bulk powders and granules. Correct material suitability assessment before purchase prevents the most common cause of screw conveyor operational problems — specifying the wrong type for your material.
- Cement powder — enclosed prevents dust emission
- Fly ash and bottom ash — zero dust operation
- Wheat flour, rice flour, and food powders
- Sugar — refined and raw granules
- Milk powder and dairy powders
- Spices, condiments, and seasoning powders
- Fertilizer granules and powder — DAP, urea, potash
- Lime powder and calcium carbonate
- Gypsum powder
- Chemical fine powders — non-hygroscopic
- Pigments and coating powders
- Pharmaceutical API and excipient granules
- Plastic granules and pellets
- Mineral powders — silica, quartz, limestone powder
- Coffee powder and cocoa powder
All suitable materials should be free-flowing to moderately cohesive and dry (moisture <15%). Material bulk density, abrasiveness, and temperature must be specified for correct screw and flight design selection.
- Sticky, wet sludge or filter cake — use shaftless screw conveyor
- Fibrous materials (wet biomass, bagasse) — use shaftless type
- Large lumps > 30% of screw diameter — clearance insufficient
- Coarse rock, aggregate, or stone — use belt or drag chain conveyor
- Slurry or semi-liquid material — use pump or drag chain
- Highly abrasive sharp materials (quartz lumps) — hard-facing required
- High-moisture sticky materials (>25% moisture) — clogging risk
- Long-distance transport (>50 m) — use belt conveyor
- Very high temperature materials (>250°C without special design)

Tubular Screw Conveyor vs U-Trough Screw Conveyor — Which Is Right for Your Material?
The single most important selection decision when specifying a screw conveyor — open U-trough or fully enclosed tubular. Choosing incorrectly results in dust emission, regulatory non-compliance, or operational problems after installation.
| Factor | ✅ Tubular Screw Conveyor | U-Trough Screw Conveyor |
|---|---|---|
| Housing type | Fully enclosed circular pipe | Open-top semicircular trough |
| Dust containment | Excellent — zero dust at conveyor body | Moderate — open top allows dust emission |
| Fine powder handling | Ideal — pipe prevents any leakage | Limited — fine powder escapes at top |
| Inclined operation (15°–45°) | Excellent — enclosed pipe prevents backflow | Reduced efficiency — material slips back |
| Food & pharma hygiene | Ideal — no ambient air contact | Less suitable — open trough exposes material |
| Hazardous chemical handling | Ideal — no personnel dust exposure | Not suitable — open top is a safety hazard |
| Cleaning and access | Moderate — end covers must be removed | Excellent — full trough access from top |
| Multiple material types | Less suitable — cleaning is more involved | Better for frequent product changes |
| Capacity at same diameter | Lower — pipe limits fill ratio to ~30% | Higher — trough allows 45% fill |
| Material cost | Slightly higher — enclosed pipe fabrication | Lower — simpler open trough construction |
| Best applications | Cement, fly ash, food powder, pharma, chemicals, inclined transfer | Grain, sugar, granules, single-floor horizontal transfer, easy-clean needs |

Why Tubular Screw Conveyors Are the Standard for Dust-Free Powder Handling
Every cement plant, food factory, chemical processing unit, and pharmaceutical facility in India that moves fine powders in enclosed, dust-free conditions specifies a tubular screw conveyor — not because of convention, but because it is the only practical solution that delivers complete material containment in a compact, reliable, low-maintenance system.
Zero Dust Emission at Conveyor Body
The enclosed pipe housing provides complete material containment along the full conveyor length — no dust leakage at the trough, no open material surface to generate airborne particles. Critical for PCB compliance in cement plants and chemical factories.
Reliable Inclined Operation up to 45°
The enclosed pipe body prevents material from tumbling back over the screw flights on inclined runs — enabling consistent throughput at angles where open U-trough conveyors lose 30–50% of their horizontal capacity. One unit replaces a horizontal conveyor plus bucket elevator plus transfer point.
Food-Grade and Pharma Compliant
SS 304/316 polished interior with food-grade mechanical seals creates a hygienic, contamination-free material path meeting FSSAI, GMP, and FDA requirements — not achievable with an open-top U-trough that exposes material to ambient air and contaminants.
Safe Hazardous Chemical Handling
Fully enclosed conveying of hazardous chemical powders and toxic dusts without any personnel exposure at the conveyor body — the only acceptable specification for MSDS-classified hazardous materials in Indian chemical plants under OSHA/factory safety regulations.
Low Maintenance — Few Moving Parts
A rotating screw shaft and two end bearing assemblies are the only moving parts. No belt to replace, no chain to tension, no rollers to fail — tubular screw conveyors achieve very long service intervals with minimal downtime when maintained according to schedule.
Compact — Minimal Floor Space
The enclosed pipe body has a much smaller cross-section than equivalent belt conveyors or drag chain systems — critical in space-constrained cement plants, chemical factories, and food processing facilities where equipment floor footprint is a key design constraint.

Tubular Screw Conveyor — Real Plant Installations by Neo Conveyors
Three representative projects — cement fly ash, food flour handling, and chemical powder transfer — showing the engineering decisions and operational results from each tubular screw installation.
Fly Ash Transfer — 200 mm Dia, 40 TPH, 12 m Inclined at 30°
A cement blending plant needed to transfer collected fly ash from a bag filter hopper to an elevated blending silo — 12 m run at 30° inclination, 40 TPH throughput, zero dust emission requirement to meet PCB environmental compliance. Previous open U-trough conveyor had failed to maintain dust containment on the inclined run, generating airborne ash contamination in the plant building.
Neo Conveyors designed a 200 mm diameter MS tubular screw conveyor — 30° inclined configuration with optimised variable-pitch flights for inclined efficiency, sealed end covers, sealed shaft bearings, 11 kW geared motor with VFD, full flanged connection to bag filter discharge and silo inlet. GA drawing approved before fabrication.
Wheat Flour Transfer — SS 304, 150 mm Dia, 8 TPH, Horizontal
A wheat flour milling facility needed to transfer milled flour between the output of two flour grinding mills and an elevated packing machine hopper — 8 m horizontal run, 8 TPH combined throughput, strict food-grade hygiene requirement for FSSAI compliance. Open U-trough conveyors had previously failed a food safety audit due to inadequate contamination control.
Neo Conveyors supplied a 150 mm SS 304 tubular screw conveyor — 2B polished internal bore, food-grade mechanical shaft seals, flanged access covers at both ends for cleaning, combined inlet hopper accepting discharge from both grinding mills, 5.5 kW geared motor with VFD for adjustable throughput. Full hygienic design documentation provided for FSSAI audit.
Chemical Powder Transfer — SS 316, 100 mm Dia, 3 TPH, with VFD
A fine chemical processing unit needed precise metered transfer of a classified hazardous chemical powder between a reactor discharge and a bagging station — 6 m horizontal run, 1–3 TPH variable dosing rate required, zero personnel dust exposure (material rated hazardous per MSDS), and stainless steel construction for corrosion resistance. Previous open system had failed factory safety inspection.
Neo Conveyors fabricated a 100 mm SS 316 tubular screw conveyor — electro-polished internal bore, mechanical shaft seal rated for hazardous powder duty, VFD-controlled geared motor for dosing rate adjustment from 1–3 TPH, fully flanged inlet and outlet connections sealed to upstream and downstream equipment, factory acceptance test before despatch.
