What is it

What is a Radial Stacker Conveyor?

A Radial Stacker is a specialised belt conveyor mounted on a pivoting mechanism that rotates around a central point to create large stockpiles of bulk materials — distributing material evenly and maximising storage capacity without requiring multiple fixed conveyors.

How a radial stacker differs from a fixed conveyor

A conventional fixed conveyor always discharges material at the same point — requiring the conveyor to be repositioned by machinery whenever one area fills, or requiring multiple conveyors to cover a stockyard. A radial stacker eliminates both problems: the conveyor boom swings in an arc (typically 180°) around a fixed central pivot, continuously distributing material across a fan-shaped area without any repositioning of the machine itself.

The pivot point is the only fixed element — the rest of the conveyor rides on steel-tyred wheels or rail-mounted carriages, swinging smoothly through the arc under manual or motorised control.

Why stockpile capacity increases dramatically

A fixed conveyor builds a cone-shaped stockpile directly below its discharge point — limited in radius by the material's angle of repose. A radial stacker builds a fan-shaped stockpile across the full arc of its travel — dramatically increasing the volume stored per unit of footprint. A 30 m radial stacker swinging 180° can create a stockpile equivalent to what would require 5–6 fixed conveyors at different positions.

This combination of larger stockpile volume, reduced equipment movement, and continuous operation makes the radial stacker the most efficient stockpiling system for bulk material handling yards.

Working principle

How a Radial Stacker Works

Four elements work together to create the radial stacker's unique stockpiling capability — the fixed pivot, the swinging conveyor boom, the radial travel mechanism, and the infeed arrangement.

1
Material fed at pivot end

Bulk material is fed onto the conveyor belt at the tail (infeed) end — near the fixed pivot point — via a feed hopper, chute, or transfer from another conveyor. The infeed arrangement is flexible because the tail end's position changes only slightly as the boom swings.

2
Belt carries material along boom

The drive motor at the head end pulls the belt, carrying material from the tail end along the full length of the inclined conveyor boom. Trough idlers along the boom contain material during travel. Belt inclination is typically 18–22° for most bulk materials.

3
Head discharges into stockpile

Material discharges over the head pulley at the elevated discharge end, falling into the growing stockpile below. As the stockpile builds directly beneath the head, the boom is incrementally swung through the arc — moving the discharge point to an unfilled area.

4
Radial travel builds full stockpile

The conveyor carriage swings continuously or incrementally through its 180° arc — driven by a motorised travel mechanism or repositioned manually with a winch. The fan-shaped stockpile fills progressively across the full arc without any repositioning of the feed equipment.

Benefits

Benefits of Radial Stackers

Five operational and engineering advantages that make the radial stacker the most efficient and cost-effective stockpiling system for bulk material handling yards.

Increased Stockpile Capacity

A 30 m radial stacker sweeping 180° creates a fan-shaped stockpile up to 5–6× larger than a fixed conveyor of the same length. More material stored per unit of yard area — reducing the land requirement for stockpile operations significantly.

Reduced Material Segregation

By continuously building the stockpile in thin, overlapping layers across the arc, the radial stacker deposits fine and coarse fractions together — reducing the size segregation that occurs when material is always dumped at the same point.

Lower Equipment Operating Costs

One radial stacker replaces 5–6 fixed conveyors, multiple transfer points, and the loaders or dozers that would otherwise be needed to reposition fixed equipment. Fewer machines, fewer operators, lower maintenance, lower energy cost per tonne stockpiled.

Efficient Bulk Material Handling

Continuous operation without stopping to reposition — the conveyor keeps running as the arc sweeps, maintaining full rated TPH throughout the stockpiling cycle. No idle time between repositioning moves that fixed systems require.

Improved Yard Management

A single radial stacker with one operator can manage the entire stockyard — positioning the boom by motorised swing control to fill different areas of the yard without additional machinery. Simplified operation, simplified maintenance.

Heavy-Duty Construction for 24×7 Operation

Fabricated in MS with heavy-duty channel frame, sealed pivot bearing, steel-tyred travel wheels, rubber lagged drive pulley, and EP belt — designed for continuous 24×7 operation in outdoor plant environments with minimal maintenance.

Industries

Industries Using Radial Stacker Conveyors

Radial stackers are deployed wherever large volumes of dry bulk material must be stockpiled efficiently — across India's cement, mining, power, agriculture, and port sectors.

Cement Plants

Limestone, sand, fly ash, and slag stockpiling at raw material storage yards. Clinker stockpiling before cement mill. Continuous 24×7 operation at 100–500 TPH.

Mining & Quarry Operations

Run-of-mine ore, coal, crushed stone, and mineral stockpiling at mine surface. Large-capacity radial stackers building multi-tier stockpiles at crusher and screening plant discharge.

Aggregate & Stone Crusher Plants

Multiple product fractions (10 mm, 20 mm, 40 mm, dust) stockpiled at screening plant discharge. One radial stacker per fraction — or multi-position stacker for smaller plants.

Power Generation Facilities

Coal and pet coke stockpiling at thermal power plant fuel yards. Radial stacker builds the coal stockpile from wagon tippler discharge — typically at 300–500 TPH across large outdoor yards.

Fertilizer Industry

Urea, DAP, MOP, and granulated fertilizer stockpiling at bulk storage facilities before bagging. Enclosed stockyard options for hygroscopic fertilizer materials that must be protected from moisture.

Biomass & Alternative Fuel Plants

Rice husk, wood chips, bagasse, and biomass pellet stockpiling at power plant fuel yards. 35° trough radial stackers for fine, light biomass materials — preventing spillage over lower-angle wings.

Ports & Terminals

Bulk cargo stockpiling from ship unloading lines at port material handling terminals. High-capacity radial stackers at 300–500 TPH building large stockpiles in limited port yard area.

Warehouses & Bulk Storage

Indoor radial stackers for grain silos, fertilizer warehouses, and bulk material covered storage — compact boom designs for indoor operation with reduced floor clearance.

Drive System Options

Geared Motor + V-Belt Drive
Standard drive configuration — geared motor at head end with V-belt or direct coupling to drive pulley. Fixed speed for consistent throughput. Most economical option.
Geared Motor + VFD
Variable frequency drive allows belt speed adjustment — matching feed rate from upstream conveyor, or reducing speed for variable-density materials. Standard on larger stackers.

Radial Travel Mechanism

Manual Radial Travel (Winch / Push)
Operator manually repositions the conveyor carriage using a hand winch or direct push at regular intervals — typically every 30–60 minutes as the stockpile builds. Lowest cost option for intermittent repositioning.
Motorised Radial Travel
Separate geared travel motor drives the carriage wheels through the arc — controlled from a remote panel or cab. Enables continuous or timed auto-swing for fully unattended stockpiling. Recommended for high-capacity, 24×7 applications.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A radial stacker is a pivoting belt conveyor that rotates through an arc (typically 180°) around a fixed central pivot point — building a large, fan-shaped stockpile of bulk material without requiring the stacker itself to be repositioned. The purpose is to maximise stockpile volume per unit of yard footprint, eliminate the need for multiple fixed conveyors, and reduce the equipment movement and operating costs of bulk material stockpiling. One radial stacker replaces 5–6 fixed conveyors and eliminates the loaders or dozers needed to spread material from a fixed discharge point.
Radial stackers handle limestone, crushed stone, coal, pet coke, sand, gravel, iron ore, minerals, fertilizer granules (urea, DAP, potash), biomass chips, wood chips, rice husk, bagasse, wheat, maize, grain, cement clinker, gypsum, aggregate, fly ash, and any dry or semi-dry bulk material that can be conveyed on a rubber belt at 18–22° inclination. Material must be dry enough to build a stable stockpile — wet, sticky, or cohesive materials require special analysis of angle of repose and stockpile stability.
Neo Conveyors manufactures radial stackers with belt widths of 500 mm (up to ~60 TPH), 650 mm (up to ~100 TPH), 800 mm (up to ~200 TPH), 1000 mm (up to ~350 TPH), and 1200 mm (up to ~500 TPH). These capacity figures are at 30° trough angle and 1.6 t/m³ bulk density — actual capacity for your material is recalculated using your specific bulk density. Our engineers provide a free capacity calculation with every quotation.
Yes — every radial stacker is made-to-order. Boom length (10–50 m), belt width, inclination angle, trough angle (30° or 35°), radial travel arc (standard 180°, custom angles available), travel mechanism (manual winch or motorised auto-swing), belt type, and frame construction (MS painted, MS galvanised) are all specified based on your material, stockpile dimensions, and site layout. Indoor low-profile designs for warehouse installation and fully enclosed boom casings for hygroscopic materials are also available. A GA drawing is included with every quotation at no extra charge.
Yes — PAN India installation, alignment, belt tracking, and commissioning by Neo Conveyors' own engineers across all Indian states. We serve cement plants in Rajasthan and MP, mining operations in Jharkhand and Odisha, aggregate plants in UP and Maharashtra, fertilizer plants in Gujarat, biomass plants in Haryana and Punjab, and all other bulk material handling industries across India. International export and installation support also available for UAE, Bangladesh, Nepal, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Lead time for standard radial stackers is 6–10 weeks depending on boom length and specification.
Manual radial travel: the conveyor carriage is repositioned by an operator using a hand winch or direct push at regular intervals — typically every 30–60 minutes as the stockpile builds beneath the current discharge position. Lower cost, suitable for intermittent operation or where an operator is always present. Motorised radial travel: a separate geared motor drives the carriage wheels through the arc, controlled from a remote pendant or cab. Enables continuous or timed auto-swing for fully unattended stockpiling — recommended for 24×7 high-capacity applications where stopping to reposition would cause upstream congestion.
Price depends on boom length (10–50 m), belt width (500–1200 mm), required capacity (TPH), trough angle, travel mechanism (manual/motorised), frame construction (MS painted/galvanised), and any special requirements (indoor profile, enclosed casing, VFD). Shorter, narrower manual-travel stackers are most economical; longer, wider, motorised auto-swing systems for high-capacity 24×7 operation are at the higher end.
