U-Trough Screw Conveyor — The Open-Access Industrial Standard for Bulk Material Handling
Neo Conveyors is a leading U-trough screw conveyor manufacturer in India since 2007. A U-trough screw conveyor combines a rotating helical screw flight with an open-top U-shaped semicircular trough — the most widely used screw conveyor design across cement, grain, food, fertilizer, chemical, and agricultural industries globally. The defining advantage of the U-trough over the tubular screw conveyor is direct operator access: removing the top cover takes minutes, giving full visual inspection and cleaning access without dismantling the system. This is why U-trough is the preferred choice wherever cleaning frequency, product changeover, maintenance access, or multiple outlet positions matter as much as throughput capacity. Multiple inlet and outlet positions, four screw flight types, and MS or SS 304/316 construction give the U-trough conveyor the operational flexibility that no other bulk material conveyor can match for horizontal or slightly inclined plant layouts. As part of our complete screw conveyor range →, every U-trough system is designed from your material, required TPH, and plant layout — fabricated at Ghaziabad and installed by our own engineers PAN India.

How a U-Trough Screw Conveyor Works — Screw Flight Selection Guide
The screw flight design inside the U-trough is the most critical factor in performance — not the trough size or motor power. Getting the flight type right for your material prevents the three most common operational problems: material build-up on the screw, uneven discharge, and excessive flight wear.
Screw Flight Type Selection Guide
Select flight type based on your material's flow characteristics, cohesiveness, and whether mixing or aeration during conveying is required. Our engineers specify the correct flight type from your material datasheet before manufacture.
Free-Flowing Materials
Continuous helical screw — maximum throughput for uniform, free-flowing materials. Fills trough to 30–45% cross-section for efficient, predictable conveying.
Best for: Cement · Grain · Salt · Fertilizer granules · Sugar
Sticky & Cohesive Materials
Open helix — the gap between the ribbon and centre shaft prevents material from building up on the pipe. Self-cleaning action during operation prevents blockage.
Best for: Wet cake · Damp clay · Animal feed · Sticky powders
Mixing & Aeration
Sections cut from the standard flight edge — creates turbulence in the material flow for gentle aeration or mixing during conveying without a separate mixing unit.
Best for: Compost · Sludge · Materials needing aeration
Blending & Conditioning
Paddles welded at intervals instead of continuous flight — material is pushed forward and mixed simultaneously. Combines conveying and blending in one unit.
Best for: Fertilizer blends · Food mixes · Conditioning applications
Standard full flight is specified for over 70% of Indian industrial U-trough applications — cement, grain, sugar, salt, and fertilizer. Ribbon flight is the standard for sticky and wet materials. Paddle flight is specified when the conveyor must also blend during transport.
The U-Trough Conveying Cycle — 4 Stages
Material Inlet
Bulk material enters through an inlet opening in the trough cover — via gravity from a hopper, silo outlet, or upstream equipment. Single or multiple inlets positioned at any point along the trough length. An inlet slide gate controls the feed rate.
Screw Rotation
The helical screw flight rotates inside the U-shaped trough, pushing material axially toward the outlet. The U-shape ensures the screw maintains contact with material along its full lower arc — maximising conveying efficiency compared to a flat-bottom or circular-bottom trough.
Controlled Discharge
Material exits through slide gate outlets positioned at one or more points along the trough. Multiple outlets allow one conveyor to serve several discharge points — slide gates are opened and closed individually to direct material to different destinations without moving the conveyor.
Cover Removal — Rapid Access
When cleaning, inspection, or maintenance is needed, the flat or hinged top cover is removed in minutes. The screw flight is fully visible from above — worn flights, material build-up, and blocked outlets are identified and corrected immediately without dismantling the system.

For fine dust requiring zero emission: tubular screw conveyor → | For sludge and fibrous wet materials: shaftless screw conveyor →
U-Trough vs Tubular Screw Conveyor — Which Suits Your Plant?
The most important selection decision when specifying a screw conveyor — open U-trough or fully enclosed tubular. This comparison prevents the most costly screw conveyor specification error: choosing a sealed system when easy access is required, or an open system when dust containment is critical.
| Factor | ✅ U-Trough Screw Conveyor | Tubular Screw Conveyor |
|---|---|---|
| Housing type | Open-top U-shape with removable cover | Fully enclosed circular pipe |
| Cleaning access | Excellent — cover off in minutes, full screw visible | Moderate — end covers must be removed |
| Product changeover | Fast — open, clean, close | Slower — sealed system requires thorough purge |
| Multiple outlet positions | Easy — slide gates at any trough position | Possible but complex and more costly |
| Dust control | Covered — moderate containment (covered trough) | Excellent — zero dust at conveyor body |
| Inclined operation | Up to 20° — standard pitch | Up to 45° — enclosed prevents backflow |
| Fine powder handling | Good (covered) — some dust at inlet/outlet | Ideal — fully sealed material path |
| Food/pharma hygiene | Good — SS 304/316 with hinged covers | Ideal — enclosed, no ambient air contact |
| Capacity at same diameter | Higher — 45% fill possible vs 30% tubular | Lower — pipe limits fill ratio |
| Capital cost | Lower — simpler open trough fabrication | Higher — enclosed pipe construction |
| Best applications | Cement, grain, food, fertiliser, chemicals — easy clean & multi-outlet plants | Fine powder, pharma, chemicals — dust-free enclosed conveying |

Why U-Trough Is the Most Widely Specified Screw Conveyor in Indian Industry
Open-top access, multiple outlet positions, four flight types, and broad material compatibility combine to make the U-trough screw conveyor the preferred bulk material handling solution across more Indian plants than any other conveyor type in its capacity range.
Open-Top Access — Cover Off in Minutes
Hinged or bolted covers removed without tools in 2–5 minutes. Full screw flight visible from above — worn flights, blocked outlets, and material build-up identified and corrected immediately, not after a costly production stoppage.
Multiple Inlet & Outlet Positions
Slide gate outlets at multiple trough positions allow one conveyor to fill several silos, hoppers, or process lines simultaneously or sequentially — eliminating the need for separate conveyors for each destination. Critical in fertilizer blending, grain distribution, and cement silo filling.
Four Screw Flight Types — Material-Matched
Standard, ribbon, cut-flight, and paddle — each engineered for a different material and process requirement. Correct flight selection prevents the three most common operational failures: build-up, blockage, and premature flight wear.
SS 304/316 Food-Grade Construction
Stainless steel 304 and 316 troughs with polished interiors and hinged covers meet FSSAI food safety and GMP standards — used for flour, sugar, spices, milk powder, and pharmaceutical ingredients where contamination-free conveying is mandatory.
Low Maintenance — Few Moving Parts
Rotating screw shaft and end bearing assemblies are the only moving parts. No belt, no chain, no rollers — low scheduled maintenance and predictable spare parts requirements over long service life.
PLC-Ready Automation
VFD speed control, PLC-compatible gate actuators, and level sensor integration available as standard options — enabling full plant automation integration without additional engineering complexity.
Common U-Trough Screw Conveyor Problems — and How to Prevent Them
Most screw conveyor operational problems are caused by incorrect specification at the design stage — wrong flight type for the material, incorrect screw pitch, undersized motor, or incorrect outlet gate design. Neo Conveyors engineers these decisions correctly before manufacture to prevent them entirely.
Industries Using U-Trough Screw Conveyor Systems
The U-trough screw conveyor is the most widely used bulk material conveyor across India's cement, agricultural, food processing, fertilizer, chemical, and waste handling industries — because no other conveyor type combines this level of operational access, multiple outlet flexibility, and material compatibility at this cost.

Three representative projects — fertilizer blending, food processing, and cement fly ash — showing the engineering decisions and operational results that distinguish a correctly specified U-trough screw conveyor from a catalogue purchase.
Blending Distribution Conveyor — 350 mm Dia, 20 TPH, 4 Outlets
A fertilizer blending unit needed to distribute three types of granular fertilizer (DAP, urea, potash) from three separate intake hoppers to four blending bins — with the ability to divert each material to any bin without separate conveyors for each combination. Previous conveyor system used six separate screw conveyors for this function.
Neo Conveyors engineered a single 12 m U-trough with paddle flight (blending during transport), 3 inlets, and 4 PLC-controlled slide gate outlets — replacing 6 separate conveyors with one system and one motor.
Multi-Product Transfer — SS 304, 200 mm Dia, 8 TPH, Hinged Covers
A flour mill producing 12 different flour grades needed to transfer flour from packaging machine discharge to a common despatch hopper — with frequent daily product changeovers between flour grades requiring fast, complete cleaning between runs. Regulatory FSSAI inspection required verifiable cleaning records and contamination-free transfer documentation.
Neo Conveyors supplied a 200 mm SS 304 U-trough with polished 2B interior bore, full-length hinged covers opening in one motion, food-grade shaft seals, and SS hinged outlet gates. Cleaning completed in 8 minutes per product changeover.
Fly Ash Transfer — MS 300 mm Dia, 25 TPH, 2 Outlets, Sealed Joints
A cement blending station needed to transfer collected fly ash from three bag filter hoppers to two blending silos — 18 m total run, 25 TPH throughput, and PCB dust emission compliance required at all trough joints and outlet gates. Previous belt conveyor had failed dust emission standards and required replacement.
Neo Conveyors designed an 18 m U-trough with gasket-sealed section joints and cover edges, 3 inlet openings over the bag filter discharge points, and 2 slide gate outlets for independent silo filling. Hard-faced flights specified for fly ash abrasion resistance.
