What is a Drag Chain Conveyor?

A drag chain conveyor (also called a Redler conveyor or en-masse conveyor) uses a continuous chain with attached flight bars moving through a fully enclosed rectangular trough — dragging bulk material along the trough floor while also carrying it as an en-masse column between flights. The result: very high capacity in a compact, fully dust-sealed cross-section.

The en-masse principle — why capacity is exceptional

In a standard drag conveyor, only material directly pushed by each flight bar moves. In an en-masse type (Redler principle), flights are spaced so that material between adjacent flights is also carried forward as a continuous column — filling the full trough cross-section between chain and trough floor simultaneously.

This en-masse carrying gives 2–3× the conveying capacity of a screw conveyor of equivalent trough cross-section, at lower power per tonne — making drag chain conveyors the preferred choice for high-capacity enclosed bulk material handling over distances that screw conveyors cannot achieve economically.

Fully enclosed — complete dust containment

The completely enclosed rectangular trough — sealed cover plate, flanged gasketed inlet and outlet connections, and no rotating shaft penetrations along its length — gives total dust containment throughout the conveying path. Unlike troughed belt conveyors open to atmosphere above the material, or screw conveyors with cover plate joint gaps, the drag chain trough is sealed from inlet to outlet.

This total enclosure is why drag chain conveyors are the standard specification at fly ash handling systems, cement raw material transfer, and biomass fuel handling wherever PCB dust emission compliance, worker health protection, or outdoor weatherproofing of material is required.

Dust-Free Material Handling

Complete rectangular trough enclosure with sealed inlet and outlet connections — zero dust emission at any point along the conveying path. Meets PCB ambient dust standards for fly ash and cement dust without additional extraction. Weatherproof for outdoor installation.


High Capacity Conveying

En-masse effect carries material across the full trough cross-section — up to 200 TPH in standard trough sizes. Significantly higher capacity per unit of trough cross-section compared to a screw conveyor of the same physical size, at lower power per tonne.


Minimal Material Spillage

Fully enclosed trough and sealed connections eliminate material spillage. No belt edge to spill over, no cover plate gaps for material to escape — critical for expensive materials (biomass fuel, grain) and for maintaining a clean, compliant plant environment.


Low Maintenance

No hanger bearings inside the trough — unlike screw conveyors, there are no intermediate bearings in the material zone to pack and seize. Only head and tail sprocket bearings plus chain tension require periodic attention. Trough liner replacement is done in-place by unbolting cover plate sections.


Long Service Life

Forged drop chain and hardened flight bars resist the abrasive wear that rapidly destroys screw conveyor flights handling clinker, coal, and mineral powders. Properly specified chain and AR400 liner achieves 3–5+ years between major maintenance in most bulk material applications.


Long Distance Conveying

Single sections up to 60 m — far exceeding the practical length of screw conveyors (typically under 15 m). For conveying distances of 20–60 m, drag chain conveyors are the most economical enclosed conveying solution, with lower power consumption per tonne per metre than screw conveyors at these distances.
