Overview

What Is a Shaftless Screw Conveyor — and Why Does It Exist?

Neo Conveyors is a specialist shaftless screw conveyor manufacturer in India since 2007. A shaftless screw conveyor — also called a centerless screw conveyor or shaftless spiral conveyor — uses a continuous helical spiral without a central supporting shaft to convey bulk material. The spiral rotates inside a U-shaped trough lined with a wear-resistant liner, driven at one end and free at the other. The single engineering difference between this design and a conventional shafted U-trough screw conveyor is the removal of the centre shaft — and that one difference changes everything about what materials the conveyor can reliably handle. The centre shaft of a standard screw conveyor is the most common failure point for sludge, sewage, fibrous waste, food waste, and wet organic materials — these materials wrap around the shaft and build up on it progressively until the screw blocks completely, the motor overloads, and the plant stops. The shaftless design eliminates this failure mode at the source: with no shaft to wrap around and no shaft surface for material to adhere to, the spiral moves difficult materials that would destroy a conventional conveyor within hours. As part of our complete screw conveyor range →, every shaftless system is custom-engineered to your material, capacity, length, and inclination — fabricated at our Ghaziabad plant and installed by our own engineers PAN India.

Engineering Cross-Section — Shafted vs Shaftless Screw Conveyor

⚠ Standard Shafted Screw Fails with sludge & fibrous material CENTRE SHAFT Build-up wraps & blocks Cross-section view Wrapping zone Shafted — Material wraps around shaft ✅ Shaftless Spiral Screw Handles sludge & fibrous material reliably NO SHAFT Open centre — flows freely Wear Liner Cross-section view Empty Centre Shaftless — Open centre, no wrapping Key: Sludge / waste material Centre shaft Wear liner Neo Conveyors — Shaftless Screw Conveyor Engineering Diagram

The shaftless spiral rotates freely inside the wear-resistant liner — no shaft surface for sludge or fibrous material to wrap around or build up on.

Why the centre shaft is the problem: In conventional shafted screw conveyors, the centre shaft creates two failure points — a cylindrical surface for sticky material to adhere to, and a surface for fibrous material to wrap around under the rotational torque. Both failure modes compound each other: build-up reduces clearance, increases torque, causes more wrapping, until the screw blocks completely. The shaftless design eliminates both failure points simultaneously. There is nothing for the material to build up on and nothing to wrap around.
Engineering Comparison

Shaftless vs Shafted Screw Conveyor — The Engineering Difference

Understanding why shaftless design was developed — and exactly which materials make the shaft the problem — is the critical first step in correct screw conveyor specification for difficult materials.

⚠ Standard Shafted Screw
Sludge and sewage wrap around the centre shaft progressively — within hours in continuous duty
Fibrous materials (rags, screenings, biomass) entangle the shaft, causing motor overload and stoppage
Sticky organics adhere to the shaft surface, reducing effective trough cross-section and throughput
Hanger bearings inside the trough contact the wet, abrasive material — causing rapid wear and failure
Excellent for dry free-flowing powders — cement, grain, sugar, fertilizer
Higher throughput per diameter for dry powder at same RPM
✅ Shaftless Spiral Screw
No centre shaft — sludge, sewage, and wet organics flow through the open centre without build-up
No shaft surface — fibrous materials have no cylindrical surface to wrap around, eliminating entanglement
No hanger bearings inside the trough — all bearing supports are at the drive end only, outside the material zone
Larger open cross-section per diameter — higher fill ratio for thick, viscous sludge materials
Wear-resistant UHMWPE liner inside trough replaces metal-on-metal contact — longer service life
Self-cleaning action of the spiral against the liner prevents progressive build-up during operation
Factor ✅ Shaftless Screw Conveyor Standard Shafted Screw
Sludge handlingExcellent — purpose-designed for sewage and dewatered sludgePoor — shaft wrapping causes rapid blockage
Fibrous materialExcellent — no shaft to entangle fibrous wasteVery poor — fibrous wrapping is the primary failure mode
Sticky organicsExcellent — open centre prevents adhesion build-upLimited — material adheres to shaft and reduces throughput
Dry fine powderModerate — tubular or U-trough more efficient for powdersExcellent — standard specification for cement, flour, fertilizer
Hanger bearing wearNone — no intermediate bearings in material zoneSignificant — bearings contact wet abrasive sludge
Trough fill ratioHigher for viscous materials — 45–50% fillLower for viscous — shaft reduces effective trough area
Maintenance frequencyLower — fewer wear points, liner replaces periodicallyHigher — hanger bearings and shaft seals in material zone
Cover accessFull-length removable cover — same as U-trough designFull-length removable cover — easy access
Cost at same capacityHigher — precision spiral fabricationLower — standard industrial screw construction
Best material typesSludge, sewage, fibrous waste, food waste, biomass, wet organicsCement, grain, fertilizer, sand, dry powder, sugar

For dry free-flowing powders — cement, grain, fertilizer, sugar — our U-Trough Screw Conveyor or Tubular Screw Conveyor is the correct and more economical specification.

Engineering Overview

How a Shaftless Screw Conveyor Works — 4 Key Components

01

Shaftless Spiral

The continuous helical spiral is fabricated from flat or round bar steel — no central shaft, no intermediate connections. It rotates inside the lined trough, supported only at the drive end by a robust gearbox coupling. The free-hanging spiral can flex slightly to accommodate varying material consistency — preventing the rigid shaft jamming that occurs with shafted screws in thick, variable-viscosity sludge.

02

UHMWPE Wear Liner

A continuous Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) liner fits inside the U-shaped trough, providing a low-friction surface for the spiral to rotate against. The liner replaces metal-on-metal trough contact — dramatically reducing trough wear and providing a self-cleaning surface that prevents sludge from bonding to the trough bottom. Liner sections are field-replaceable when worn.

03

Material Flow

Sludge, fibrous waste, or wet organics are fed into the inlet opening in the trough cover. As the spiral rotates, material is pushed axially from inlet to outlet — filling the open trough cross-section at 45–50% fill ratio. The open centre provides the material movement path: no shaft means no obstruction, no wrapping point, and no progressive build-up during operation.

04

Drive & Discharge

A single geared motor at the drive end provides all torque through the spiral. No intermediate hanger bearings contact the material — eliminating the most common bearing failure mode in shafted sludge conveyors. Material exits through a gate or drop outlet at the far end into the downstream process — thickener, centrifuge, dryer, or skip.

Key Advantages

Why Shaftless Screw Conveyors Are the Correct Specification for Sludge & Waste

🔓

Zero Clogging Risk

The single most important operational advantage — no centre shaft eliminates the wrapping and build-up failure mode that causes 80% of shafted screw conveyor blockages in sludge and waste water treatment applications. Continuous duty becomes achievable where shafted conveyors require daily clearing.

🧵

Handles Fibrous & Stringy Materials

No cylindrical shaft surface means no entanglement point for rags, screenings, long-fibre materials, and stringy organics — materials that destroy a standard screw conveyor within hours of operation at any STP or municipal waste facility.

🔧

Lower Maintenance Cost

No intermediate hanger bearings in the material zone — the single greatest maintenance cost of conventional sludge screw conveyors. Drive-end bearings only, operating in a clean environment outside the sludge zone. UHMWPE liner is the primary wear item — field-replaceable without removing the spiral.

📐

Higher Fill Ratio for Viscous Materials

The open centre trough cross-section — without a shaft occupying the central area — allows higher fill ratios for thick, viscous sludge at 45–50% versus 30–35% for equivalent-diameter shafted conveyors. Smaller diameter achieves the same throughput as a larger shafted unit.

🌊

Variable Material Consistency

Sludge and waste water material consistency varies significantly between batches and even within a single conveying run. The shaftless spiral's flexible free-rotating design accommodates varying viscosity and solids content without motor overload or screw jamming.

🛡️

Enclosed Odour Control Option

Gasketed cover options with vent connection for odour control ducting — critical in municipal STP/ETP installations where H₂S and organic odour emission at the conveyor is an occupational health and compliance issue.

Problems Solved

Common Sludge Conveyor Problems — Solved by the Shaftless Design

Every problem listed below is caused by specifying a conventional shafted screw conveyor for sludge or fibrous material. The shaftless design eliminates each failure mode at the engineering level — before the conveyor is installed.

⚠️ Sludge Wrapping Around Centre Shaft
Cause
Standard shafted screw conveyor specified for sewage sludge. Sludge adheres to the steel shaft during rotation, building up progressively until the effective trough cross-section is blocked and the motor trips on overload.
✅ Shaftless Solution
No centre shaft — sludge flows through the open spiral centre without any cylindrical surface to adhere to. This failure mode is permanently eliminated at the design stage. The UHMWPE liner provides a non-adhesive trough surface that resists sludge bonding.
⚠️ Fibrous Material Entangling the Shaft
Cause
Screening waste, rags, long-fibre biomass, or hair-like fibrous material wraps under the rotational torque of a standard screw — forming a dense plug around the shaft within minutes of operation at any STP or municipal waste facility.
✅ Shaftless Solution
No shaft surface to wrap around. Fibrous materials pass through the open centre of the spiral without the rotational entanglement mechanism that creates shaft plugging. Continuous duty with fibrous screening waste becomes operationally reliable.
⚠️ Hanger Bearing Failure in Sludge Zone
Cause
Intermediate hanger bearings inside the trough of a standard screw conveyor are immersed in wet, abrasive sludge during operation — bearing seals fail rapidly, bearing life measured in weeks rather than years, causing frequent costly stoppages for bearing replacement inside the trough.
✅ Shaftless Solution
No hanger bearings inside the trough — the shaftless spiral is supported only at the drive end, outside the sludge zone. Drive-end bearings operate in a clean environment at normal maintenance intervals. This single advantage accounts for the majority of the maintenance cost saving over conventional shafted sludge screw conveyors.
⚠️ Variable Sludge Consistency Causing Motor Trips
Cause
Sludge from belt press or centrifuge varies significantly in dry solids content between batches — 18% DS in the morning, 28% DS in the afternoon. The rigid shafted screw cannot accommodate this variation — it is sized for one consistency and jams on denser material.
✅ Shaftless Solution
VFD-controlled shaftless conveyor with a high service-factor gearbox accommodates varying sludge consistency — speed is reduced automatically when torque increases, preventing motor overload trips during periods of denser material. The flexible shaftless spiral also deflects slightly under varying loads, absorbing torque spikes that would jam a rigid shaft.
⚠️ Rapid Trough Wear at Bottom
Cause
The lower surface of a standard screw conveyor trough experiences continuous metal-to-metal friction as the screw flight scrapes abrasive sludge across the steel trough bottom — causing progressive wear that eventually results in trough perforation and sludge leakage.
✅ Shaftless Solution
The UHMWPE wear liner between the shaftless spiral and the trough provides a low-friction, abrasion-resistant contact surface that significantly outlasts bare steel — and is field-replaceable in sections without removing the spiral from the trough, at a fraction of the cost of a trough replacement.
⚠️ Odour Emission at Conveyor
Cause
Standard screw conveyor with basic flat covers does not prevent H₂S and other odorous gases generated by sewage sludge from escaping into the plant environment — creating occupational health hazards and compliance issues at municipal STP and ETP installations.
✅ Shaftless Solution
Gasketed odour-control covers with a flanged vent connection allow the conveyor headspace to be connected to the plant's existing odour-control ducting or scrubber system — maintaining negative pressure above the sludge surface and preventing any H₂S release into the plant environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shaftless Screw Conveyor — Industrial Buyer FAQs

A shaftless screw conveyor uses a continuous helical spiral without a central supporting shaft — the spiral rotates inside a lined U-shaped trough, supported only at the drive end. A standard shafted screw conveyor has a helical flight welded to a central steel shaft. The absence of the shaft eliminates the primary failure mode for sludge and fibrous material: wrapping and build-up around the shaft. No shaft means nothing to wrap around and no surface for sticky organics to adhere to — enabling reliable conveying of sludge, sewage, fibrous waste, and organic materials that would block a shafted conveyor.
UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is a high-density polymer liner fitted inside the U-shaped trough. It provides three functions: (1) Low-friction surface between the rotating spiral and the trough — preventing metal-on-metal wear. (2) Non-adhesive surface — sludge and sticky organics do not bond to UHMWPE as they do to steel, maintaining the self-cleaning action of the spiral. (3) Wear resistance — UHMWPE is significantly more abrasion-resistant than mild steel at equivalent thickness. Liner sections are field-replaceable at a fraction of the cost of trough replacement.
Yes — shaftless screw conveyors operate effectively at inclinations up to 30°. The spiral pitch and RPM are optimised for each angle. For sludge handling at inclinations above 20°, a VFD is specified to accommodate the higher torque requirement. Steeper inclinations above 30° are not recommended for sludge conveying — material tends to slump back between spiral pitches. For vertical or near-vertical sludge lifting, a vertical shaftless conveyor or pump is the correct specification.
For sewage sludge conveying inside occupied buildings or near plant operators — yes, gasketed odour control covers with a vent outlet are strongly recommended and often required by environmental compliance regulations. H₂S generated by anaerobic decomposition of sewage sludge is both odorous and potentially hazardous at concentrations above 10 ppm. Gasketed covers with negative-pressure connection to the plant's existing odour scrubber system contain all H₂S within the conveyor enclosure and prevent any release to the plant environment.
Neo Conveyors designs shaftless screw conveyors up to 25 m in a single section and up to 100 TPH capacity. For longer runs, multiple sections are coupled. Capacity depends on spiral diameter (150–600 mm), RPM, material dry solids content, and inclination. Sludge capacity calculation is significantly more complex than dry powder — actual capacity at a given DS% must be calculated from your specific material characteristics. Our engineers will calculate exact capacity for your sludge or waste material before manufacture.
Price depends on spiral diameter, trough length, inclination, material of construction (MS/SS304/SS316), liner type, drive power, VFD requirement, cover type (standard/odour control/IP65), and any special requirements. Shaftless conveyors are more expensive than equivalent-diameter shafted screw conveyors due to precision spiral fabrication and UHMWPE liner — the cost premium is recovered rapidly through elimination of maintenance downtime.
